The term "Purnima" is Sanskrit for "full moon," and the festival is observed on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month in the Hindu and Buddhist lunar calendars, typically falling in April or May in the Gregorian calendar.

• Ancient Roots: Even before formal recognition, followers of Buddha held festivals in his honor.
• 1950: The first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists in Colombo, Sri Lanka, officially recognized the full moon day of May as Buddha Purnima during the Vesak celebrations. The choice of the full moon day in May was significant as it is believed that the Buddha attained Nirvana on a full moon day.

• Enlightenment: Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya (Bihar, India) after years of meditation and spiritual quest, becoming the Buddha, the "Awakened One." This event is the foundation of Buddhist philosophy.
